Dr. James Willans, CTO
Name: Dr. James Willans
Job Title: CTO
I joined Lhasa in September 2016 as CTO. Prior to joining Lhasa I spent 10 years, drawing on my academic roots, establishing and helping start-up companies get full value from innovative technology and software development techniques. This was followed by 5 years at HSBC in a range of IT leadership roles where, in addition to seeing the world, two experiences stand out as being particularly rewarding. As Global Head of Service Engineering Tooling, I initiated an approach to software automation that under my leadership was adopted world-wide, saving the bank multi-millions of dollars in effort. Following on from this, as Global Head of Digital Platform Architecture, I led the design of the next generation software platform for delivering HSBC customer applications globally in support of digital transformation. This initiative underpins HSBC's move towards DevOps delivery and cloud hosting, and saw HSBC adopt contemporary technologies, approaches and thinking.
My academic roots and leadership experience across a range of small and large organisations mirrors Lhasa's trajectory - initially a university spin-off which grew quickly to become a medium-size business; and which I believe has the potential to become a large enterprise. At the heart of Lhasa's success is its ability to innovate using the latest scientific and technological thinking, and this approach has underpinned Lhasa becoming a world leader in accelerating the discovery pipeline of the life sciences industry. As Lhasa's CTO, I put in place the strategies and direction which ensures Lhasa adopts best of breed technologies and thinking - in tune with industry need - to continually increase the speed and value of the products Lhasa delivers. It is a privilege to work as part of Lhasa's leadership team and I pride myself in being able to contribute a spectrum of perspectives ranging from multi-year company strategies to low-level technical nuts and bolts.
