Dr. Chioma Okpara, Application Scientist
Name: Dr. Chioma Okpara
Job Title: Application Scientist
My name is Chioma, and I joined Lhasa Limited as an Application Scientist in October 2022.
Before this, I worked at Randox COVID Laboratory from 2021 to 2022 analysing the clinical molecular processes to determine COVID test results. My work ranged from human nucleic acid extraction, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction to multiplex array analysis for SARS and other viruses.
Soon after commencing my role at Randox, I obtained a Doctorate in Biotechnology from The University of Manchester in 2021. As a PhD student, my research was based on the genetic adaptation of cereal plants to stress. This was a natural progression from my master’s degree in Environmental Biology (Genetics) which focused on the phenotypic screening of cereal crops. My interest in plant science was birthed during my undergraduate internship at the Tissue Culture Laboratory of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture.
Throughout my years in school, I bred a personal curiosity about changes that may occur phenotypically and genetically in organisms when they are exposed to certain chemicals. This inspired my interest in Lhasa Limited.
At Lhasa, we use in-silico methodology to reduce laboratory experiments necessary to assess chemical safety and facilitate data sharing.
In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, travelling and meeting people.
