Lhasa shared excipient database now encompasses over 4000 tolerability records from almost 20 years of pharmaceutical industry collaboration

The Lhasa Excipients Data Sharing Initiative facilitates the anonymous sharing of data on the tolerability of pharmaceutical excipient formulations.

This provides pharmaceutical organisations and drug development companies with the unique ability to access an external, centralised dataset for excipient and vehicle toxicity data whilst remaining anonymous when donating their own records.

Consortium members are already refining their formulations and associated experiments by deploying the excipients dataset at the early stages of development to guide formulation.

Since 2008, proprietary excipient toxicity data has been collected from top global pharmaceutical organisations and curated by the Lhasa Limited team of scientists.

In 2026, Lhasa Limited is pleased to announce the latest update to the excipients database. Hear more from our Lead Application Scientist!

Lhasa Excipients shared data release

The initiative and consortium members drive precompetitive collaboration of high-quality tolerability information.

The Excipients 2026.1 release from the Lhasa data sharing initiative expands the database for another year, to now include:

  • Over 4,000 tolerability records for a total of 1,437 different pharmaceutical formulations

This extensive dataset has been strengthened by almost 20 years of data sharing between members of the Lhasa Excipients consortium, motivated by:

  • Mitigating the duplication of costly experiments
  • Reducing the need for and refining ongoing animal testing
  • Reaching confident decisions earlier to guide safe and efficient formulations

To access the latest records in Vitic Excipients, you must be a member of the Vitic solution and participant in the consortium.
Consortium members will automatically see the updated dataset housed and powered by Vitic Excipients.

Shared data, shared knowledge, shared progress

Excipients are essential components of drug products, but they are also potential toxicants.

To establish permissible and safe limits for these substances requires understanding the levels of potential toxicity.

Proprietary formulation data and an expansive portfolio of tolerability records can inform this crucial part of pharmaceutical drug development.

Tolerability data and safety insights specifically related to pharmaceutical excipients aid confident selection of derisked vehicle components.

Leveraging shared data and collective industry knowledge streamlines decision making in formulation, enabling earlier, high quality data-driven conclusions.

Alternative methods for assessing chemicals

The consortium has been actively sharing and donating data for almost two decades. Meeting annually, the initiative addresses REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) aims to reduce animal testing.

REACH submissions of Lhasa members are supported by reducing the instances of duplication of in vivo preclinical testing, ruling out unnecessary animal studies.

The data sharing initiatives individually and collectively promote conducting stability and risk assessments using alternative, in silico evaluations of pre-existing study data.

Increased accessibility to an expanded proprietary excipient toxicity dataset containing more than 4000 tolerability records is another significant milestone in the UK roadmap to phasing out animal testing faster.
