Dave Watson, Retired CEO
Name: Dave Watson
Job Title: Former Chief Executive Officer
I’m Dave and I am the former CEO of Lhasa Limited. My path to Lhasa Limited was a meandering one! On leaving school I worked in the steel industry for Firth Brown until I scraped together the ONC in Physical Sciences that got me into the University of Sheffield to study Metallurgy from where I got a B.Met (Hons.) in 1982. Having spent some time providing sales and technical support for refractory raw materials, getting to travel to exciting places like Sweden, Port Talbot, Middlesbrough and Motherwell, I then moved into the packaging industry in a variety of sales and marketing roles, during which time I studied part-time, culminating in the award of an MBA from Sheffield Hallam University in 1995.
My first general management role was as MD of Seven Newcastle (a packaging artwork and reprographics studio) which grew substantially under my stewardship. I simultaneously supported the Seven Worldwide/AGT Group in their US and Australian operations. Next, joining A4e Consult as Chief Executive Officer, I brought together a number of disparate government service contracts, spinning out A4e Fund as a standalone division to manage learning contracts.
As CEO of Lhasa Limited from 2005 - 2017, I was privileged to lead a very talented team that has enabled us to grow both in terms of our own numbers and of the members we support with the science and software we develop. Doing all this in the context of sound governance in line with our charitable purpose has been a real pleasure, allowing me to make the altruistic decisions alongside the more business focussed ones and providing a lovely balance to what I do on a day to day basis.
In addition to my role in Lhasa Limited, I was for 6 years, a director of Abbeydale Sports Club Limited (the venue for my many years playing for Sheffield RUFC) and I continue to be non-executive director for ValueAdding.com, a small, Sheffield based consultancy. Right now I’m still messing around with my MG ZB Magnette Varitone ‘classic’ as a member of the Daft Lads Car Club, who meet every Sunday to tinker with the 1982 Mercedes 250SL. Austin A30, MGB roadster and Frog-eyed Sprite, drink coffee and talk ’bloke’ rubbish, a speciality of mine! Now grandad to Henry William Skeen (27/6/15) I may find that I have other distractions.....
